BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Iowa baseball team dropped the series finale to Florida Atlantic, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at FAU Baseball Stadium.

Nick Terhaar and Maddux Frese did a great job for us today on the mound. Unfortunately, we had one of our worst performance of the season on the offensive end,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Gable Mitchell had a good day at the plate with three hits and was on base five times. We had opportunities all game long but had some bad at-bats chasing outside the zone when we needed them most.”

Freshman Nick Terhaar made his first career weekend start, pitching three innings and allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Junior Maddux Frese was charged with the loss, tossing 4 2/3 innings in relief while giving up one run on five hits, walking one and striking out five.

Florida Atlantic struck first with a run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Iowa answered in the top of the third when senior Gable Mitchell tripled down the left field line, scoring graduate student Bryce Phelps from first to tie the game. Moments later, senior Caleb Wulf singled through the right side to bring Mitchell home and give the Hawkeyes a 2-1 advantage.

The Owls responded with a run in the bottom of the third to even the score at 2-2 before taking the lead for good with a solo home run in the fourth. FAU held Iowa scoreless over the final six innings to secure the win.

“Our defense played great all weekend long. Winning a series on the road is definitely a positive but losing on Sunday like we did today is never okay. We will learn from it and get better.”

Mitchell led the Hawkeyes at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Iowa finished with nine hits but stranded 11 runners.

OF NOTE
– Mitchell recorded his first triple of the season and finished with a team-high three hits.
– Frese struck out five over 4 2/3 innings of relief.
