A building stabilization project is underway at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Jail on South Capitol Street in Iowa City. County officials say the project will manage the replacement of the entire brick shell of the building as well as the roof. The repairs are being done to stabilize the exterior of the building and will require road and sidewalk disruptions throughout the course of the project.
Pedestrians are asked to please use the sidewalk on the east side of South Capitol Street.
Those needing access to the main entrance of the building are asked to use the walkway that has been made available at the north end of the building.
Motorists are asked to please proceed with caution as South Capitol Street remains a two-way street, but the southbound lane (closest to the Sheriff’s Office) is more narrow than usual due to the cement barriers. Construction vehicles and personnel will be coming and going frequently from the work site, so please slow down and watch for unusual traffic patterns around the building.
