Two Republican Congresswomen are joining Democrats in calling on the Whirlpool Corporation to reconsider announced layoffs at its Amana plant.

Whirlpool announced last month that it planned to lay off almost 400 of the 1,500 workers at the plant. The layoffs are part of what a corporate news release called a multi-year plan to modernize its facilities.

Last week, several elected Democrats wrote to Whirlpool officials asking them to reconsider. Now Republican Congresswomen Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Ashley Hinson have sent a letter to Whirlpool also urging the company to reconsider. The plant is in Miller-Meeks’ district, but many affected employees live in adjacent counties represented by Hinson.

Miller-Meeks and Hinson wrote to Whirlpool CEO Marc Bitzer that the move is “unacceptable” and “deeply troubling”. It goes on to ask whether the jobs are being transferred to Mexico or elsewhere outside of the United States and asks the company to consider federal incentives from the Trump administration to keep the affected workers.

The layoffs are set to take effect next Monday.
