An alleged drug user is accused of illegally purchasing three firearms from the Coralville Scheels.

22-year-old Mohamed Ali of Iowa City allegedly bought a Radical Firearms RF-15 .223 rifle on July 13th, 2024; a Sig Sauer P320 9mm pistol on March 5th, 2025; and a Hellcat Pro-C 9mm pistol on March 15th, 2025. In each case, Ali reportedly marked on federal forms that he was not a drug user.

Iowa City Police conducted a search warrant of Ali’s Jema Court residence last month and claim they recovered cellphone records that suggested Ali had been an active marijuana user at the time of the three purchases. A THC cartridge was allegedly found on Ali’s person, and his bedroom reportedly contained THC cartridges, THC oil, empty drug packaging, and rolling papers.

Ali is charged with three counts of Providing False Information in the Purchase of a Weapon and one count each of Keeping Premises for the Use of Controlled Substances, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Driving While Suspended. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 18 years in prison.
