IOWA CTY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated the St. Thomas Tommies, 7-2, at Duane Banks Field on Tuesday evening.

The Hawkeyes got on the board right away in the bottom of the first with a single up the middle from senior Caleb Wulf, scoring senior Gable Mitchell from second base.

The game remained scoreless until Iowa added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Mitchell singled through the left side to score redshirt junior Ben Swails from third. Mitchell later crossed the plate for the second time in the game on a sacrifice fly from redshirt junior Kellen Stromeyer.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mitchell recorded his second RBI of the game with a bunt single that scored senior Joey Nerat. Mitchell then scored for the second time on a balk, extending the Hawkeye lead to 5-0.

The Tommies got on the board in the top of the seventh with two runs, cutting Iowa’s lead to 5-2. Iowa responded with two more in the bottom of the eighth to cap the scoring. Graduate student Bryce Phelps singled up the middle to score Swails, then Wulf reached on a fielding error, allowing Phelps to score from second.

The Hawkeyes had nine pitchers appear on the mound gathering a total of 10 strikeouts and only two hits.

OF NOTE
– Freshman Cole Moore made his first career start and earned his first career win on the mound.
– Mitchell led the Hawkeyes with three hits and two RBIs in five at-bats.
– Mitchell has recorded at least one hit and one RBI in each of Iowa’s four midweek games this season.
– The Hawkeyes allowed just two hits in tonight’s game, tying their season low (last vs. Loras, 3/3).
