An inmate at the Johnson County Jail has been found dead in their cell.
A news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s office indicates that during a routine check just before 4:00 Wednesday an inmate was found unresponsive in their cell. Jail staff immediately attempted lifesaving measures and requested an ambulance, however the individual was later pronounced deceased.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation with assistance from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and an autopsy is underway at University of Iowa Health Care. Pursuant to Iowa law, the State Jail Inspector has been notified as well.
No further information is available at this time, and further details will be released pending family notification.
