The Iowa Cancer Registry’s 2026 report projects 100 more residents will die from the disease this year compared to last year.

The Daily Iowan reports an estimated 21,700 new cancers will be diagnosed among Iowans, and approximately 6400 will die from cancer this year.

This year, the Registry partnered with the Agricultural Health Study to analyze cancer in Iowa’s farming population, due to public concerns about pesticide use.

What they found in the ongoing study is farmers had 13 percent fewer cancer cases than expected. It’s believed the rates are lower because farmers, as a rule, must maintain their health to be able to work. The study also found that farmers and their spouses tend to smoke and drink less than the general population of Iowa.
