A Wellman man accused of trying to entice a minor for sex acts has been given a deferred judgment.

That was the sentence handed down by Judge Brandon Schrock to 38-year-old Nelson Overholt of Circle Drive on Thursday.

Iowa City Police say between October of 2024 and March of 2025 Overholt had communications with a subject he believed to be a girl under the age of 16. Overholt allegedly stated he wanted to engage in sex acts with the girl and reportedly sent the recipient photos of his genitalia.

Overholt arrived at a predetermined location in March of last year with the reported intention of going to the girl’s house to engage in a sex act. Instead, waiting police arrested Overholt and charged him with Enticing a Minor and Telephone Dissemination of Obscene Material to a Minor.

If convicted on both counts, Overholt would have faced a maximum of seven years in prison.
Schrock gave Overholt a deferred judgment on the enticement charge and dismissed the dissemination charge. Overholt will be listed on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry for ten years and has been put on four years of probation.
