An Iowa City man was charged with theft after allegedly going through backpacks at the Old Capital Center earlier this month.
According to police, 46-year-old Yahya Karim was seen on security cameras the evening of April 2nd going through two backpacks. Karim was allegedly seen rifling through both bags before stealing one of them. He allegedly gave the other to another suspect to steal its contents, then the two left the area.
Estimated value of the items in the two backpacks is up to $1500.,
Karim had been given a trespass warning for the Old Capital Center the day before.
He was charged with 3rd degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years if convicted.
