The Cedar Rapids School District will undergo major changes under a plan to reduce costs.

The Gazette reports the first resolution to close five elementary schools and the Truman Early Learning Center was approved 6-1. The vote also okayed the creation of intermediate 5th and 6th grade schools to the district.

The second resolution, drawing new attendance boundaries for elementary, intermediate, middle and high schools, was passed unanimously.

The plan enables the District to invest in curriculum like dedicated teachers for music, orchestra, band, art and PE in every building rather than spread thin across multiple schools, and grows athletics and extracurricular programs beginning in the fifth grade.

District leaders estimate implementation of the new plan will save them $5 million annually.
