A Coralville woman has pleaded guilty to bankruptcy fraud after hiding proceeds from an annuity check from the nursing home where a patient was living, and from US Bankruptcy Court.
KCRG TV reports a nursing home resident suffered severe cognitive impairment and was unable to manage their financial affairs. Between 2019 and 2022, the resident incurred a $150,000 debt, despite holding significant assets.
64-year-old Donita Eckrich admitted to hiding a $75,000 annual annuity check from the court, and illegally transferring assets belonging to the resident.
After the bankruptcy court discharged the resident’s debt, Eckrich cashed the annuity check and made five $15,000 withdrawals to hid the funds.
Eckrich could face a prison term of up to five years when sentenced.
