The US Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday that it will conduct comprehensive reviews of cleanup work at three Iowa Superfund sites.

Each individual site will undergo a Five-Year Review to ensure ongoing or completed remediation efforts continue to protect human health and the environment. Upon completion of the review, EPA will make a Five-Year Review Report available on the Superfund Site Profile page.

The Iowa sites include Mississippi River Pool #15 and the ALCOA Davenport plant, both in Riverdale.

The other Iowa location is in rural Lee County at the EI DuPont site on County Road X23 in West Point.

Five-Year Reviews generally are required when hazardous substances remain on-site above levels that permit unlimited use and unrestricted exposure. The reviews provide an opportunity to evaluate the implementation and performance of a remedy to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment.

Additional five-year reviews in the Midwest are scheduled to start later this year and will be announced closer to the start date.
