A Des Moines man may be lucky to only be facing an Operating While Under the Influence charge after getting into a car accident, then being rescued after posting about it on social media.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was dispatched after someone called in a welfare check for Jacob Maurer, 24, about 3:45 a.m. Friday. The reporting party said Maurer had posted on Facebook he was “going to freeze.”

A responding officer found Maurer wrapped in a blanket and asleep in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, which he had wrecked in the 1200 block of 360th Street, about a mile south of the Oxford exit on Interstate 80.

The deputy says Maurer smelled heavily of alcohol and showed other signs of intoxication. He also failed field sobriety tests and registered a blood alcohol concentration of .160 on a preliminary breath test. He refused later DataMaster testing.

Maurer is charged with 1st Offense OWI, a serious misdemeanor carrying up to one year in jail.
