Allegedly attacking the mother of his child, then threatening to sexually assault her has led to an Iowa City man’s arrest.

Iowa City Police were called a residence on Carriage Hill Drive just after 10:15 Friday night for a report of a fight and a woman screaming. One of the residents, 20-year-old Bret Eldridge, answered the door after officers knocked for several minutes.

Both Eldridge and his baby’s mother had visible injuries and several items were broken inside the residence. Eldridge claimed he broke the items, and said he only held the woman down.

The mother of Eldridge’s child claimed he held her down and threatened to sexually assault her.

The couple’s seven-month-old child was present during the alleged altercation. Police say Eldridge showed signs of intoxication, several alcoholic beverage containers were found inside the residence, and the mother of Eldridge’s child said he had been drinking.

Investigators determined that Eldridge’s wounds were consistent with defensive injuries. He was charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse Causing Bodily Injury, 2nd Offense Domestic Abuse Assault, Child Endangerment and Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age. If convicted on all charges he faces a maximum of nine years in prison.
