A car passenger failing to fasten their seat belt led to an arrest on weapons and drug charges Friday night.
Iowa City Police pulled over 26-year-old Shadoe Van Damme of Lloyd Avenue just before 6pm near the corner of Gilbert Street and McCollister Boulevard after noticing his front seat passenger was not wearing a seat belt. While talking to Van Damme, the officer noticed a pistol next to where he kept reaching near his right leg. The gun was confiscated and discovered to be a .40 caliber Ruger.
A K9 sniff of the vehicle turned up a meth pipe and two grams of crystal meth in Van Damme’s right pocket. Four grams or marijuana were found in Van Damme’s shoe, and a pipe with burnt marijuana residue was found next to the driver’s seat.
Van Damme, who has multiple previous drug convictions, is charged with Carrying Weapons, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over five years in prison.
