A Solon man was arrested Wednesday night for an assault committed earlier this week.

Authorities allege that 35-year-old Derek Westen of South Market Street and the victim were engaged in a verbal argument in the front yard of the residence at approximately 10:30 Monday night. The argument turned physical when Westin struck her in the neck with an open hand.

The woman pushed Westen away, but he allegedly retaliated by striking her in the face with his elbow. That blow fractured the woman’s lower jaw and fractured some of her bottom teeth, which required surgery.

Westen was booked into the Johnson County Jail and charged with Assault Causing Serious Injury and 2nd offense Domestic Abuse Assault, having been convicted in 2001. If convicted on both charges, Westen could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
