Johnson County officials say they’ve filed new, more serious charges against a Des Moines man who had indecent contact with two children at Swisher Fun Days.

According to a news release, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office filed two new counts of Indecent Contact with a Child against John Schulte, 25, on Thursday. The charge is an aggravated misdemeanor carrying up to two years in jail.

The Sheriff’s Office says the incident took place during the July 28 event when Schulte grabbed two girls – ages 10 and 4 – lifted them above his head and placed his face in their groin areas. The girls told police Schulte had told them he loved them and would take care of them.

Those standing nearby then confronted Schulte and say he picked up the four-year-old as if he was going to leave with her. However, one of those in the crowd snatched the girl from him and returned her to her mother.

Schulte had initially been charged with two counts of Simple Assault and one of Public Intoxication. Those charges are all simple misdemeanors with a maximum jail sentence of 30 days each. He’s already pleaded not guilty to those charges and trial is currently scheduled to begin Sept. 7.
