Sentencing has been delayed for a Mount Pleasant man convicted in an Iowa City murder case.
42-year-old Curtis Jones was scheduled to be sentenced on Friday. But earlier this week his attorney, Douglas Davis II, filed a motion seeking a new trial. Court records show Judge Lars Anderson will consider that motion, and sentencing has now been pushed back to March 26th.
Jones is awaiting sentencing in the beating and shooting death of 34-year-old Jonathan Wieseler at his place of employment, Lederman’s Bail Bonds on South Capitol Street, the night of April 22, 2017. Jones was convicted by a Polk County jury in January of 1st Degree Murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.
Jones had represented himself during trial, but Davis was retained to aid him with any questions.
Jones is currently being held in the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison after being convicted in another Iowa City murder by a Scott County jury last fall. In that case, police say Jones shot taxi driver Ricky Lillie in the head during a robbery behind the Alexis Park Inn.
He has filed an appeal in that case.
Each trial was moved out of Johnson County due to pretrial publicity.
