A Cedar Rapids woman faces charges that she crashed her car in an Iowa City family’s front yard, then tried to flee the scene.

The homeowner called Iowa City Police to the accident scene on Whispering Prairie Avenue just after 2:30 Wednesday morning. Investigators determined the vehicle had driven up into the yard and hit a tree stump. The driver, identified as 28-year-old Paige Sumner of Fruitland Boulevard Southwest, was found a short distance from the scene. Police say she had injuries consistent with being in an accident, and was still holding the keys to the car.

Sumner admitted to having alcohol, and registered a blood alcohol concentration over a .08. Her license has been barred since January of 2017, and she admitted to driving illegally.

Sumner is charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 3rd or Subsequent Offense, Driving While Barred, Failure to Maintain Control, and Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of seven years in prison.
