Iowa City Police say a fight at a pre-school graduation ceremony turned violent as one man threatened another with a gun after he allegedly tried to run the other over with a car.

Officers were called to the area of Baker Street and Bradford Drive just before 12:30 Friday afternoon. Witnesses say 23-year-old Anthony Waller of Cedar Rapids and 67-year-old Will Muhammad of Waterloo got into an argument after Waller tried to hug his child. Waller and the child’s mother have a protective order between them.

Waller allegedly became angry and accelerated his car toward Muhammed and the child’s mother, who is now Muhammed’s wife, in an aggressive and threatening manner. Muhammed allegedly responded by following Waller in his vehicle, pulling up beside him, displaying a handgun and threatening, “don’t f-ing try to run at my wife or next time you won’t be so lucky!”

Both men are charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, an Aggravated Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of two years in prison.

Waller faces an additional charge of Violating a Protective order.
