A Coralville woman faces charges that she cut a man with a butcher knife during a domestic disturbance in Iowa City.

Iowa City Police were called to a residence in the Forest View manufactured housing community on Laura Drive at 6:45am Saturday for a domestic fight involving a knife and a medical emergency where a man’s finger was reported dangling.

The occupants initially refused to answer the doors for arriving officers and medical personnel, but 34-year-old Karen Mejia Mazariego of 5th Street eventually let them in before they had to breach the door.

Police say Mejia Mazariego showed multiple signs of intoxication, and had blood on her shirt and pants despite having no injuries. She said she had drunk seven beers since midnight.

Mejia Mazariego said the blood was that of a male inside the residence, but she was not the one who attacked him. She claimed she had only been trying to help him.

The victim told police Mejia Mazariego had tried to stab and slash him with a large butcher knife, causing his wounds. He was forced to barricade himself inside a room in the residence.

Mejia Mazariego was arrested and charged with Assault With Intent to Inflect Serious Injury and Going Armed with Intent. If convicted, she faces a maximum of seven years in prison.
