An Iowa City woman is accused of illegally transferring over $650,000 out of her mother’s bank account on the day her mother died in 2016.

56-year-old Edith Hora turned herself into Iowa City police Monday and is charged with first degree theft.

Police say Josefina Sexton, the mother, willed 70 percent of the money to her husband, Marion. He was deprived of that inheritance when Hora made the transfer. She allegedly took that money and mixed it in with other accounts, transferring over $200,000 to her husband’s trucking business.

The Press-Citizen reports that Hora’s half-sister noticed the withdrawal and notified their father.

Hora faces up to ten years in prison if convicted on the charge.
