Iowa State Patrol investigating fatal I-80 accident in Iowa County

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating a fatal accident on Interstate 80 in Iowa County.

A news release from the State Patrol says 37-year-old Alan Helm of Murray, Utah was driving a semi pulling a double trailer eastbound near the Victor exit around 2am Tuesday when his vehicle left the roadway, entered the median and went through a guardrail. It then struck the B Avenue overpass.

Helm and a passenger, 76-year-old Gerry York of Draper, Utah, were transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by Iowa County Ambulance. York, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was killed. Helm was wearing his seatbelt and remains hospitalized.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
