An Iowa City man who reportedly was highly intoxicated is alleged to have broken into the wrong apartment, thinking it was his own.

According to police reports, 21-year-old Dylan Peterson was on the floor below his Capitol Street apartment Wednesday morning at approximately 2:16am. The residents called the ICPD and said there was a prowler outside; while en route, Peterson broke into the apartment through the front living room window and was inside.

Upon arrival, the officer saw the broken window, shards of glass, and glass and electronics strewn around inside. They called out to Peterson to make himself known, and he emerged from a bedroom in a t-shirt, boxers and blood on his hands.

When interviewed, Peterson said he had been drinking at “Joe’s Place” and had come home. Blood was observed on the walls and toiletries, blood in the reporting party’s bed, and destroyed property.

Peterson consented to field testing, which he failed. He blew a .243 on a PBT.

He later claimed that he thought he was in his apartment, but also claimed to know the residents of the apartment he mistakenly broke into. When asked to describe them, he identified them as white males, which police say they were not.

Peterson was taken into custody and charged with Trespass causing damage, 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to up to over three years in prison.
