A Hiawatha man faces over thirty years in prison if convicted on charges related to a pair of Coralville burglaries.
According to police, 31-year-old Scotty Ray Abram of Sunset Lane entered a parked unoccupied work vehicle in the north lot of Carter & Associates on Westcor Drive on November 26th at 1:30am. The vehicle was allegedly used to drive through the secured gate, and then abandoned in front of the business. His actions damaged the gate, fencing and the work vehicle. Video footage from the incident shows Abram leaving the vehicle, running to a parked vehicle, and leaving the scene.
Then the morning of November 28th, police were called to the 600 block of 7th Avenue for report of a burglary, The victim told officers that the new GM pickup in his garage had been rifled through, evidenced by the open glove compartment and center console. Abram allegedly broke into the garage’s side door using a prybar, but there were also signs of prybar marks on the rear door and a shed on the victim’s property.
The door to the home from the garage was also forced open, with door and trim both damaged.
Abram was questioned under Miranda, and allegedly admitted to being at both locations at the time of the burglaries. Abram’s own keys were found on the second step in front of the entrance to the 7th Avenue home from inside the garage.
A warrant was issued for Abram’s arrest, and he was booked into the Johnson County Jail Wednesday night. He’s been charged with two counts of 3rd degree Burglary, possession of burglar’s tools, 5th degree theft, 2nd degree theft, two counts of 2nd degree criminal mischief, and one count of 2nd degree burglary.
