A North Liberty man’s car trouble led to a drug bust for the Johnson County Sheriff’s office Saturday afternoon.

Deputies responded to a broken-down vehicle on Interstate 380 near the I-80 interchange just after 3:45pm. They noticed the car smelled strongly of burnt marijuana. A probable cause search was conducted, which turned up marijuana wax and methamphetamine packaged in individual baggies, as well as several rolls of unused baggies. The driver of the vehicle, 45-year-old Todd Rothenberger of Emily Street, allegedly admitted that the substances were marijuana and meth.

Rothenberger was arrested and charged with a Controlled Substance Violation, Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, and two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 17 years in prison.
