A Chicago man who was arrested for operating while intoxicated in the aftermath of an Iowa City shooting incident in October has now been additionally charged with drug possession.
According to police, they were called to the 800 block of Maggard Street in the early morning hours of October 27th on reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they observed that several vehicles in the parking lot and apartment building itself had been hit with rounds.
Several vehicles, including one driven by 41-year-old Billy Dee Williams of Chicago, attempted to flee the scene but were stopped by officers for questioning. He was reportedly found to be intoxicated and with an open container of alcohol inside. A warrant was obtained to search his vehicle, and officers allegedly located five bags of marijuana totaling over 20 grams.
On January 27th, Williams pled guilty on the OWI and open container charges and was fined $65. On Wednesday, a warrant was issued for his arrest on the drug charges, and he was picked up and booked into the Johnson County Jail Wednesday night.
Williams has two previous drug convictions, for distribution of Crack in 2002 and possession of Cocaine with intent to deliver in 2003. His third drug charge is therefore a Class D felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
