Don’t take your mother’s rental car and get caught speeding; she may tell police to search it for your drugs. That’s a lesson an Iowa City man learned Thursday morning.

According to police, 37-year-old Clinton Lake of Fox Trail was reportedly observed going 100 miles an hour on McCollister Boulevard just before 8am yesterday, and was stopped near its intersection with Old Highway 218. Upon contact, the vehicle was found to be a rental car rented to Lake’s mother.

Officers contacted the mother, who stated not only was she revoking her consent to let Lake drive her vehicle, but tipped police to possible drugs in the car and gave them the okay to search it.

Officers allegedly discovered a paper with a wax substance, a metal container with a small amount of green, leafy substance, and a substance in a clear bag. Under Miranda questioning, Lake reportedly identified the items as CBD wax and marijuana.

Officers allege that Lake was anxious but sleepy, with droopy bloodshot eyes. He reportedly admitted to smoking two joints that morning. A DRE determined that he was under the influence.

Lake was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance first offense, and first offense OWI, both serious misdemeanors punishable by a jail term of up to one year each if convicted.
