School districts in Iowa will be able to request permission from the State Board of Education to require their students to finish the school year remotely.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the guidelines were released Friday, and include online, physical pick up and drop off of assignments, over the phone or other delivery methods.
Department spokesperson Staci Hupp said that there is growing demand for the options so that students can continue to learn while the schools are closed. Currently, Governor Kim Reynolds is recommending that schools remain closed until at least April 13th, while the federal government is recommending a voluntary national shutdown through April 30th.
School districts across the state have offered voluntary educational opportunities but aren’t allowed to grade or award credit because it’s not required of all students.
Six states have already closed schools for the rest of the year, including Alabama, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Virginia and Vermont.
