A University of Iowa fraternity is under investigation after reports of them hosting a gathering of 30 to 50 people in late March.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that UI Assistant Dean and Director of Student Accountability Angela Ibrahim-Olin consulted with the Sigma Chi Executive Office and suspended the operations and activities, both in person and virtual, of the Alpha Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity pending the investigation’s outcome.
The fraternity is accused of hosting an unregistered social event on March 28th and the university is in the process of determining if the chapter violated rules regarding serving alcohol to minors in the fraternity, failing to comply with a university directive, and other violations. That would include Governor Kim Reynolds’ directive on March 17th, banning gatherings or events of more than ten people.
The 26 chapter homes are not under University authority to close, although 12 of them have done so. The remaining open ones are partially closed, with one or more members approved to live there because of special circumstances.
The paper reports that UI spokeswoman Haley Bruce said the university will communicate directly with the chapter once the investigation is complete, and that the final report is being written and edited.
