Police have arrested the second suspect allegedly involved in an attempted murder in Coralville Monday night.
Coralville Police Chief Shane Kron, who sent out a news release Tuesday night, says that 41-year-old Tyris Winters of Peoria confronted his victim at the Super 8 Motel on Hayden Fry Way just before 7:30pm Monday. The victim was hit in the head and foot. The injuries were not life-threatening.
Witnesses identified two suspects, who were taken into custody in the 700 block of 1st Avenue. Winters was charged with Attempted Murder, while the other suspect, who was determined not to be the second shooter, was released from custody later that night. Guns believed to be used in the shooting were recovered near the scene.
Police were able to identify the second suspect as 39-year-old Tony Watkins of Davis Street in Iowa City and took him into custody Tuesday night. He’s also been charged with attempted murder. The two each face a maximum of 25 years in prison.
It was later discovered that Winters is the father of 21-year-old Kejuan Winters of Iowa City, who was shot and killed just before 10am Monday at 1960 Broadway Street.
The investigation thus-far indicates Tyris Winters and Watkins sought out their victim to confront him about Winters’ son’s death. Both suspects are now accused of firing handguns at the victim before fleeing on foot.
Both cases remain under investigation.
