An Iowa City man was charged with dependent adult exploitation after allegedly stealing thousands from a person he was placed in care of.
According to criminal complaints, 42-year-old Virgil Holderness of Fox Trail was placed in the role of caretaker for the victim in August of 2019. Over a period ending in February of this year, Holderness is accused of making dozens of unauthorized purchases, using the victim’s money. He’s also charged with opening a credit card using the victim’s information without the victim’s knowledge and making purchases.
Police say that the monetary loss to the victim exceeded $28,000.
After the investigation was complete, a warrant was issued for Holderness’ arrest on August 31st. He was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with 1st Degree Theft, Dependent Adult Exploitation, Identity Theft, and Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card. If convicted on all counts, Holderness could be sentenced to 19 years in prison.
Holderness was ordered to have no further contact with the victim.
