The Iowa City Community School District is adjusting its COVID-19 safety guidelines in response to changes made by the Centers for Disease Control.
On October 21st the CDC began a new recommendation that people should quarantine if they spend 15 cumulative minutes over a 24 hour period within six feet of someone who tests positive for the coronavirus. That’s even if both subjects were wearing masks at the time or times of the exposure.
Guidelines put out by the Iowa Department of Public Health, on the other hand, say a 14-day quarantine is not necessary if both people were wearing masks. But the district has ignored the state’s guidelines in the past, preferring to follow more strict CDC guidelines.
According to the Iowa City district’s online COVID-19 dashboard, 83 students and 21 staff members were testing positive as of Wednesday afternoon. 116 students and 25 staffers were quarantining. Three classrooms are currently closed, and one extracurricular activity has been closed.
The dashboard can be found at www.iowacityschools.org.
