Police arrest suspect for Cedar Rapids burglary and kidnapping

A man who reportedly forced entry into a Cedar Rapids residence and kidnapped his ex-girlfriend has been arrested.

According to police, officers were called to the 1000 block of Center Point Road Northeast just before 6:15am Tuesday for a disturbance. The 911 caller said that he had been shot by a man who entered the residence. Arriving officers located a 33-year-old male, uninjured, inside the house. He told police he was the 911 caller, and said a man forced entry into the residence and took his 20-year-old girlfriend. The man was believed to be the woman’s ex-boyfriend. Officers found a spent shell casing and damage to the ceiling from a discharged round.

Area law enforcement was sent an attempt to locate the suspect and the woman. Investigators found the woman in Cedar Rapids at her residence around 10am. Details of how she was able to return safely to her residence have not been released, as they are part of the ongoing investigation. The woman did sustain injuries as the result of being assaulted by the man who took her.

Cedar Rapids and Marion police located the suspect just before 3pm. After a short vehicle and foot chase, the suspect was apprehended behind the Post Office on US 151 in Marion. He’s been identified as 26-year-old Nicholas Hallman.

Hallman has been charged with 2nd degree Kidnapping, 1st Degree Burglary, Domestic Assault causing Injury, two counts of Going Armed with Intent, two counts of Intimidation with a Weapon, two counts of Carrying Weapons, and Assault While participating in a Felony. If convicted on all counts, Hallman could be sentenced to a maximum of 95 years in prison.

Marion police also arrested a second suspect who was the driver of the vehicle. He crashed a black Ford Taurus into a fence on the north part of the Collins Community Credit Union on Willowood Avenue, north of the Post Office. He fled on foot before being apprehended. The driver has been identified as 20-year-old Chandrique Day. He’s been charged with attempting to elude, reckless driving, driving while suspended, striking an unattended vehicle, and marijuana possession.
