Convicted Illinois felon charged with possessing shotgun in North Liberty

A convicted Illinois felon was arrested in North Liberty Thursday night after police say he handled a shotgun.

North Liberty Police say 27-year-old Laron Leonard admitted to moving a loaded shotgun from place to place in his South Chestnut Street residence just before 10:30 Thursday night. Leonard is prohibited from possessing a firearm after felony convictions in DuPage County, Illinois in 2011 and Vermillion County, Illinois in 2016.

Leonard was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 12:45 Friday morning and charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm By A Felon. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Leonard was released from jail just after 8:45 Friday morning.
