It was a record-setting day at the UNI-Dome Thursday as #3 Regina dominated top-ranked Grundy Center 52-28 in the Class A state football championship game.

Alec Wick set a Class A championship game record with 226 yards receiving on nine catches, capped off by an 88-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Ashton Cook in the 4th quarter.

Not to be outdone, Regal running back Theo Kolie had a record five touchdowns on the ground with 124 total rushing yards.

Regina’s seventh touchdown was a 12-yard reception from Carson Jensen, his only reception of the game. Wick connected on a 22-yard attempt in the second quarter for Regina’s only field goal of the game.

Regina set a Class A championship game record with 52 points scored. The game was also the highest-scoring Class A championship game in history, with a total of 80 points scored.

Three of Grundy Center’s four touchdowns came in the final 13 minutes of the game, when Regina already had the game well in-hand.

The title is Regina’s eight state championship all-time and seventh in the last 11 seasons. It’s their first in Class A.

Thursday’s win was also Marv Cook’s seventh championship as Regal head coach.

Regina’s eight state championships puts them fourth all-time only behind Harlan, West Des Moines Dowling and Emmetsburg. The Regals become only the fifth team to win state championships in three different classes.
