An Iowa City man was taken into custody on St. Patrick’s Day evening after allegedly threatening to assault the upstairs neighbor of a friend he was visiting.

Police say the incident occurred around 7pm in the 300 block of South Taft Avenue. They received a call from a woman who said that her downstairs neighbors had a guest over who was threatening to assault them, and mentioned a gun.

An officer made contact with the caller, who reportedly was hysterical and afraid for her safety. Numerous witnesses from neighboring apartments corroborated her story, saying that they heard a man say he was going to “go up there and beat their asses.”

Police went to the apartment in question, and heard two males talking very loud and mentioning a gun. They made contact with the guest, identified as 26-year-old Tanner Haulk of the Bon Aire Mobile Home Lodge on Highway 6 East. He reportedly smelled strongly of ingested alcohol, had bloodshot watery eyes and slurred speech. He allegedly admitted that he was going to go up to the woman’s apartment, and claimed he was trying to help his friends who have a pre-existing issue with the woman.

Haulk’s friends claimed they were trying to calm him down.

He was taken into custody, and allegedly told his friends that he was just being stupid. Haulk has been charged with 2nd degree Harassment, a serious misdemeanor. The victim requested a no-contact order between her and Haulk, saying she was in fear of future assault and harassment.

Haulk was released the following morning, and served with the no-contact order. Arraignment will be set once the court case is filed.
