A two-vehicle accident at Coral Ridge Mall has led to the arrest of a Kalona man.

Witnesses reported that 30-year-old Joseph Halstead of the Meadowbrook manufactured housing community on A Avenue crashed his 2004 Chevy Silverado into a parked car in the Scheel’s parking lot just before 8pm Thursday. He then went inside the mall.

Surveillance video from the lot shows the crash. After Coralville Police arrived, Halstead reportedly exited the store and walked toward his vehicle. When he saw the officers, he was allegedly hostile, used slurred speech, and had a strong odor of ingested alcohol. When asked how much he had to drink, Halstead replied, “It doesn’t matter.” He refused breath testing. Police were unable to determine if Halstead was drunk before he arrived at the mall.

Halstead was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication, Driving While Barred and Operating Without an Interlock Device. Online records show he was later charged with three separate drug charges.

If convicted on all counts, Halstead faces a maximum of over seven years in prison.
