A Davenport man faces multiple charges after a traffic stop Sunday night reportedly turned combative.
A trooper stopped 36-year-old Deandre Hopkins of West 63rd Street at around 9:45 pm on northbound Interstate 380 because it appeared that there was no rear plate attached to the vehicle. As the vehicle was stopping, the trooper noticed that the vehicle did appear to have an Iowa temporary tag taped to the rear bumper under a tinted plate cover.
The plate had an expiration of August 24th, but the trooper believed it could have been altered from the number 6 to the number 8 to make it appear valid. Hopkins reportedly said he didn’t have his license on him, but produced an unsigned and undated Iowa title for the vehicle. However, the vehicle identification number on the temporary tag didn’t match the title.
Hopkins allegedly didn’t identify himself correctly at first, giving the birthdate and name of his brother. Upon further questioning, he gave his real name. A check of his records showed an outstanding warrant out of Linn County for an Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Assault while displaying a Deadly Weapon charges. He was detained while the warrant was confirmed.
A subsequent search of Hopkins’ vehicle allegedly turned up a Ruger 9mm handgun with a loaded magazine and a round in the chamber. While the trooper was photographing the gun, Hopkins reportedly escaped the patrol car and ran into the north ditch. He was quickly caught, and he then allegedly tried to escape again, running towards his vehicle. The trooper had to tackle Hopkins and hold him until a caged squad car arrived.
He had to be physically dragged to the car and allegedly hit the trooper in the jaw and kicked another in the leg. Once detained, he was transported to the Johnson County Jail.
Besides the outstanding warrant, court records show Hopkins with a felony conviction from 2002 for receiving, possessing and selling a stolen vehicle out of Cook County Illinois.
He faces a number of charges for Sunday night’s incident. They include Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon, Interference with Official Acts while in possession of a Dangerous Weapon, two counts of Assault on Peace Officers, Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury, and Providing False Identification Information. If convicted on all charges, Hopkins could be sentenced to over 13 years in prison.
