Allegedly intentionally hitting a construction worker with her car has led to an Iowa City woman’s arrest.

Iowa City Police say just after 10:30am on November 9th, 69-year-old Cindy Lou Vest of Pondview Court was eastbound on I Street when she stopped at a construction zone on 1st Avenue, which was closed to through traffic as crews were laying asphalt. Vest allegedly attempted to cross through the intersection, but was stopped by a uniformed construction worker. The worker told Vest multiple times that she could not cross the intersection, but Vest allegedly cursed at the worker, insisted she was going to cross, then tried to drive around the worker. Police say Vest struck the worker with her 2003 Buick Regal, injuring the worker’s knee and running over the worker’s toes.

Vest proceeded eastbound on Wayne Avenue, while the worker required hospitalization.

Police caught up with Vest at her residence. She allegedly admitted to driving the Buick, seeing the worker in the roadway, knowing the worker was directing her to turn around, and to crossing through the construction area and driving off without returning to the scene. She’s charged with Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident. If convicted, she faces a maximum of one year in jail.
