Charges have been dropped against the alleged accomplice in an attempted Coralville revenge killing scheme.

40-year-old Tony Watkins of Davis Street in Iowa City and 42-year-old Tyris Winters of Peoria, Illinois had each been facing charges of Attempted Murder, Going Armed With Intent and Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury. Coralville Police say the two fired handguns at another man at the Super 8 Motel on Hayden Fry Way in April of 2020. According to arrest records, the two sought out their victim to confront him about Winters’ son’s death.

Winters’ son, 21-year-old Kejuan Winters of Iowa City, was shot and killed the previous day inside his Broadway Street apartment. The three suspects have all either been found guilty by a jury or reached plea deals.

Online records show all three charges against Watkins were dismissed earlier this month. Winters recently reached a plea deal with prosecutors that saw him plead guilty to the Willful Injury charge. The other two charges were dropped, and Winters was given a five-year prison sentence.

If convicted on all charges, each man could have faced up to 35 years behind bars.
