Two women were taken into custody early Friday morning after an alleged assault on a man trying to break up a fight in downtown Iowa City.

According to the arrest reports, 21-year-old Melissa Carrillo-Alonso and 22 year-old Jariah Hannible were outside the Sports Column on South Dubuque Street just before 2am when they got into an altercation with another man. Witnesses allege that the man involved in the altercation was a third party trying to break up the original fight. The two women reportedly got aggressive with the man, striking him multiple times Carrillo-Alonso and Hannible then allegedly proceeded to kick and strike the man’s vehicle, causing an estimated $400 in damages.

The women both had bloodshot watery eyes and smelled of consumed alcohol. Carrillo-Alonso reportedly admitted to coming from a bar, as evidenced by the bar wristband she was wearing. She refused a PBT.  Hannible reportedly admitted to drinking and submitted to a PBT showing a blood-alcohol level of .124 percent.

The two were taken into custody and each charged with Disorderly Conduct, 4th degree Criminal Mischief, and Public Intoxication. They were released on their own recognizance later that day by Judge Jason Burns pending further legal procedures.

Carrillo-Alonso and Hannible could be sentenced to up to 14 months in jail if convicted on all counts.
