Lawyers for an Iowa City man convicted of sexually abusing a minor are seeking to postpone his reconsideration hearing.

Lawyers for 59-year-old Jeffry Waite filed a motion for continuance on Thursday. Waite was found guilty in 2019 on five counts of 3rd Degree Sexual Abuse and one of Lascivious Acts with A Minor. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Police say Waite sexually abused the girl at his Oak Crest Hill Road residence from 2013 to 2019.

Waite appealed his convictions, claiming “the State’s expert witness directly and the prosecutor indirectly vouched for the complaining witness’s credibility, his convictions are not supported by sufficient evidence, and the district court abused its discretion in imposing consecutive terms of incarceration.”

The Iowa Court of Appeals rejected Waite’s appeal and reaffirmed the sentence last year. A reconsideration hearing is currently set for next Friday.
