The Cedar Rapids man who was shot by police officers during a traffic stop earlier this summer has been formally charged after his release from a local hospital.
Just before 4 am on July 30th, officers conducted a vehicle stop for erratic driving in the 2200 block of Glass Road NE. 23-year-old Brandon Lee Nelson of Cedar Rapids reportedly brandished a firearm and gunfire was exchanged between the driver and the two officers.
Nelson sustained gunshot injures and was treated at the University of Iowa Hospital. He was recently discharged and taken to the Linn County Jail, where he faces 2 counts of Attempted Murder, two counts of Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, 3 counts of Assault on a Peace Officer with a Dangerous Weapon, two counts of Interference with Official Acts while Armed, Going Armed with Intent, Persons Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Eluding, and Driving While Barred.
The two officers who fired their weapons were 26-year law enforcement veteran Matthew Jenatscheck and 3-year CRPD veteran Blair Klostermann. Jenatscheck fired his weapon 8 times, while Klosterman fired four times. After an investigation, they were cleared of any charges by Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks.
