Over 800 people have signed a petition rejecting a new design for City Park pool.
The Daily Iowan says the petition was presented during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. The proposed changes include a new diving well, lawn areas, a lazy river, and additional shaded space. The predesign would reduce the 9 50-meter lap lanes down to just three, and reduce the size of the diving well.
Petition organizer Amy Kretkowski is a UI law professor. She said that the pool does need to be repaired, but residents who signed the petition overwhelmingly wanted to leave the pool design as is.
Others said that the lap lanes get used on a regular basis, and reducing them by two-thirds was unacceptable.
Iowa City Parks and Rec Director Juli Seydell Johnson said there will be more community outreach before the new pool design is final. Construction on the pool is slated to begin in 2025 at a cost of over $6 million.
