An Iowa City man was arrested over the weekend after an alleged attack on a woman.
Police were called to the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street at 11am on reports of a woman bleeding from a laceration near her neck. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, bleeding from the face, neck and jaw areas and walking back from a neighbor’s apartment where she reportedly ran to get help.
The woman stated that she was in a physical altercation with her boyfriend, 42-year-old Stephen Carter . During the incident, he allegedly struck her on the left side of her face with a glass object that shattered and cut her face. She then fled to a neighbor’s apartment to call 911.
When the officer and the woman returned to the apartment together, Carter had reportedly left. Blood on the floor and the broken pieces of what appeared to be a porcelain vase were observed.
The woman sustained multiple cuts to the face as a result of the alleged attack, and she was taken to the emergency room for treatment and to have stitches. The police report says the woman may have permanent disfigurement as a result of Carter’s actions.
Carter was located later that day and booked into the Johnson County Jail. He was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault with Intent to cause Serious Injury, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years if convicted.
