The City of Iowa City is beginning an improvement project on its buses to protect drivers.

KCRG TV reports the city will be installing new doors separating drivers from passengers to 23 buses over the next several months. Newer buses, ordered in 2020, already have these doors installed.

According to a recent study from the Urban Institute, violence against transit workers tripled from 2008 to 2022.

Darian Nagle-Gamm, the Iowa City Transportation Director, told the station Iowa City drivers have also experienced incidents of assault in recent years.

The project is expected to cost the city about $248,000. Service is expected to run normally as the city installs the doors.
