A Coralville man faces jail time after an alleged traffic violation found him in possession of marijuana and a firearm.

24-year-old David Sanders of Boston Way was stopped on US6 East and Lakeside Drive Thursday just after 10:30pm after the vehicle in which he was riding allegedly failed to make a stop at a red light and turned right onto Highway 6. The officer who observed the incident reportedly observed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and a probable cause search was conducted.

Officers reportedly found a small plastic bag of marijuana under the back right passenger seat where Sanders was sitting. A firearm was allegedly located in a backpack sitting in the trunk.  Sanders reportedly admitted to ownership of the marijuana and the weapon.

He was charged with marijuana possession and person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons. If convicted on both counts, he could face up to two years in jail.
