The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a structure fire near West High School Monday night.
According to an ICFD news release, at 6:29 p.m. firefighters were dispatched to a garage fire at 24 Kennedy Parkway. Crews arrived on-scene within four minutes. All occupants had exited the residence prior to the ICFD’s arrival.
The fire started in the soffit space at the front of the structure and moved to the attic space. The fire was brought under control 40 minutes after the first unit arrived on the scene.
There were no reported injuries to occupants or firefighters; however, four occupants were displaced. The structure sustained an estimated $400,000 in fire and smoke damage throughout the building. An investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire resulted accidentally from excessive heat due to a construction project on the exterior of the residence.
