Traffic stop leads to drug and weapon charges against Muscatine man

A Muscatine man stopped for a traffic violation Tuesday afternoon in Iowa City faces weapon and drug charges.

51-year-old Harman Shepherd of Colorado Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 5:37 pm. Earlier in the afternoon, he was at the intersection of Highway 6 and Lakeside Drive and allegedly made a left hand turn at the red light.

Shepherd had an active warrant out of Johnson County going back to June 2023 for failure to appear at a case management conference on charges of drug possession and driving while barred, and placed under arrest. He consented to a search of his 2001  Jeep Cherokee, and officers reportedly found a pipe to smoke meth, 9 pipes used to smoke marijuana, three jars containing THC wax, 2 small bags containing meth and six knives over 5 inches in length.

Shepherd was charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, and one count each of Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If  convicted of all charges, he could face a maximum prison term of over five years.
